As I’ve discussed previously, Google has been getting pretty clogged of late with searches for many items being dominated by worthless or pirated content from content mills.
Well, not Google strikes back with an updated algorithm.
It’ll be interesting to see how this all shakes out. Obviously, Google had to do something to improve its product, but it remainst o be seen how much of an improvement this will be. Michael Orthofer has got himself all in a twist over what he perceives Google as having done to his pages; for my own part, a cursory look at my site stats doesn’t indicate too much movement one way or the other pre- versus post-shift. I’m not quite OCD enough to research this all that thoroughly, but a few searches for titles I recall covering fairly well over the past year or so seem to rank them more or less high up.
There’s definitely been a change for the search results for my own name (which I’m fairly familiar with . . . what can I say?). The results seem to have moved much more toward a social media focus, with both of my websites hitting the top spots, followed by my completely useless LinkedIn profile (I forgot I had one), and my Facebook and Twitter accounts. Lower down (2nd and 3rd pages) you start to see actual examples of my work on the Internet, and then it goes into the usual incoherencies that characterize the long tail of search engine results.
